Crete<\/strong> is the \nlargest and most populous of the Greek islands, and the fifth-largest \nisland in the Mediterranean Sea.  The capital and the largest city is \nHeraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065.Crete \nforms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of \nGreece, while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own \npoetry and music). It was once the center of the Minoan civilization<\/strong>\n (c. 2700\u20131420 BC), which is currently regarded as the earliest \nrecorded civilization in Europe. Crete has very rich and fascinating \npast. Not only in the famous Knossos Palace, but almost in every \ncorner, you can feel centuries of Crete\u2019s history. The island is one of\n the most significant archeological destinations in the world.Cretans \nare very friendly and welcome you with open arms and open hearts. There\n are many destinations famous for beaches, others for mountains. In \nCrete you get both.  If you\u2019re tired of sun, you can go hiking or chill\n in one of the stunning island gorges. If you don\u2019t know how oranges, \nlemons, fennel or rosemary grow, Crete is an immense  Botanical Park \n-Garden  and the right  place to visit. Its land\u2019s formation and the \nregion\u2019s microclimate are perfect home for fruit trees, herbs, \nmedicinal and ornamental plants from all over the world. Crete\u2019s \ncuisine is one of the best in the world. Fresh and aromatic, a heaven \nfor vegetarians. Add in Crete\u2019s fantastic olive oil (always extra \nvirgin, cold pressed!) and a sip of local wine, you will dream of \nstaying in Crete forever.
